9 important dancing rules

9 Things You Need to Know Before Attending Bachata Classes

Discover the 9 most important rules of our dance school so you can easily prepare for Bachata classes!

Congratulations‼️You’ve reached a dose of knowledge that will help you understand the rules of Bachata Rebel Dance Academy, so you can easily prepare for any class.

➡️ Here are 9 things you should know before entering the dance academy:

  1. Choose your outfit;
  2. Remember about personal hygiene;
  3. Have the right attitude;
  4. Expect to hear many new dance terms;
  5. Prepare your goals;
  6. Learn what to pay attention to in order to choose the best learning option for you;
  7. Treat dance as a sport;
  8. Take care of your fitness;
  9. Reconnect with your body – dance mindfulness.

📌 1. Choose your outfit.
Dance is about feeling good, not just looking good. Here’s what to remember… Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Choose clothes that allow freedom of movement. Test your outfit beforehand to make sure you can move freely in it. Remember! Bring clean shoes to change into! If you have new shoes, make sure to break them in first. Wondering if you should come to class in heels? Keep in mind that not every pair of heels is suitable for dancing. Proper dance shoes will provide comfort as well as a stylish look. On the other hand, shoes with a hard sole are not suitable for dance lessons. Tip: If you’re still unsure about what to wear, follow our social media accounts where you’ll find ideas for dance outfits.

📌 2. Remember about personal hygiene .
We kindly ask that you adhere to personal hygiene rules, which, in everyday terms, means maintaining cleanliness of your body, especially before dance classes. Due to the nature of Bachata, where students have a very close distance to one another, we want to avoid uncomfortable situations where someone feels uneasy while dancing due to sweaty bodies or unpleasant odors from their partner. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to your body and the clothes you wear to class. Are your clothes clean, fresh, and washed, or are they sweaty from a previous workout? For dance classes, bring a spare shirt so you can change as soon as you feel uncomfortable. Also, bring deodorant to neutralize any sweat odors. If you need more information on this matter, we are here to offer help and advice. Regular personal hygiene, as well as wearing freshly washed clothes before training, should help 100%. We wish you successful training in a pleasant atmosphere.

📌 3. Have the right attitude.
Coming to class with the right attitude is key if you don’t want to leave feeling burned out or frustrated. Before class, remind yourself that there’s nothing wrong with not “getting it” the first time. Be open and ready for feedback, and ask for help whenever you need it. Remember, you’re in dance class to learn new things and refine what you’ve already mastered. If you notice you’re falling behind, don’t compare yourself to other dancers or feel out of place. No one is judging you or trying to catch you making mistakes. Every student is there to learn, just like you, and everyone learns at their own pace. Focus on your own progress, and it will be easier for you to improve. Practice makes perfect.

📌 4. Expect to hear many new dance terms.
Have you ever watched a video of a Bachata lesson and felt like the instructor was speaking a different language? Dance is a form of visual language, so there are certain steps and figures that cannot be “translated” into familiar words. To solve this communication challenge, the creators of dance styles have come up with their own names and terms to describe dance concepts. You will learn them in your dance academy classes.

📌 5. Prepare your goals.
You probably signed up for a dance course for a specific reason, right? Even if you just wanted to try something new, it’s important to reflect on your intentions for joining the course to make the most of it. The next step is to set specific, realistic goals based on those intentions. If your goal is to discover a new passion, aim to complete the entire course without comparing yourself to others. If your intention is to develop new skills, set a goal to master one or two steps and figures in each class. If your aim is to meet new people, challenge yourself to introduce yourself and chat with everyone in your group. Every time you achieve your goal, reward yourself in a way that feels right for you. This will keep you motivated to continue attending classes.

📌 6. Learn what to pay attention to in order to choose the best learning option for you.
Although most dance schools offer passes for one-hour classes per week, beginner dancers are advised to start with at least two hours of regular classes per week. During the first few sessions, students get to know the instructors and learn useful information about the dance style they have chosen. You can learn more about this topic from article “From Zero to Super Bachatero – Fast and Effective Dance Learning”:

📌 7. Treat dance as a sport.
There are many ways to enjoy dancing—at parties, in clubs, or even at home in front of the mirror. However, you should know that when you take part in classes at a dance academy, you’ll be fully focused on dancing for about an hour or longer, which requires endurance and preparation, just like in sports! Similar to sports, you need to take care of your body to make the most of your dance classes. Eat a light, healthy meal an hour or two beforehand to boost your energy. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after class to stay hydrated. Warm-ups before class are extremely important—never skip them! These simple exercises help relax your muscles and prevent injuries and soreness later. After class, have a small snack—granola, smoothies, or fruit are great options. Give your body time to rest, and when you get home, remember to roll out any tense muscles. If you tend to sweat a lot during exercise, bring a towel with you.

📌 8. Take care of your fitness.
When deciding to acquire new skills—or perhaps even discover a lifelong passion like Bachata—you must not only attend dance classes but also take care of your physical and mental well-being. In dance, you engage your muscles, learn to control tension and relaxation in your body, explore how to use your breath while moving, and understand how to give clear signals when leading a partner or interpret and follow them correctly. However, all of this can become exhausting and discouraging if you don’t take the time to learn a few things about yourself beforehand and recognize your limitations—ones you can, of course, work on throughout your dance journey. Many people forget that taking care of their body both before and after dance classes is crucial for every dancer, whether beginner or advanced. Many injuries and long breaks from dancing result from a lack of awareness and a careless approach to dance classes, which some may see as just a form of entertainment. Remember, dancing is not like playing chess or cards—your muscles will be engaged whether you’re in top physical shape or still working on it. Don’t put yourself at risk of unnecessary soreness or injuries. Instead, incorporate healthy habits and physical exercises into your daily routine to help you transition into the dance world with greater ease.

📌9. Reconnect with your body – dance mindfulness.
Release the emotions stored in your body through dance. Be here and now. Dance and mindfulness are two practices that complement each other perfectly, creating harmony and peace in our lives. By combining movement with presence in the moment, we can find calmness in our minds and balance in our bodies. Give yourself the chance to experience the beauty of dance mindfulness and discover peace and joy through movement.
